Oil Cooler — Herambh Coolingz

An oil cooler keeps hydraulic and process oil at a temperature where it keeps doing its job. Hot oil thins, oxidises and loses lubricity, so oil temperature control is really machine protection. Herambh Coolingz manufactures oil coolers for hydraulic power packs, heat treatment furnaces and machine tools across India.

Oil is the working fluid in hydraulic systems and a common quench or heat transfer medium in metal treatment. In both roles its temperature has to be managed, and an oil cooler is the equipment that does it without disturbing the rest of the circuit.

Why Oil Temperature Control Matters

When oil heats beyond its design range, viscosity drops and the hydraulic system loses the thin protective film that keeps metal surfaces apart. Wear accelerates, seals harden and the oil itself oxidises, forming varnish and sludge that clog valves and filters.

Cooling the oil back into its working band restores viscosity, extends oil life and stabilises system behaviour. The pump, valves and cylinders then perform as they were designed to, shift after shift.

Where Oil Coolers Are Used

Hydraulic power packs on presses, injection moulding machines and machine tools generate heat that has to be removed continuously. Heat treatment shops cool quench oil so that hardening results stay consistent. Gearboxes, compressors and test rigs also use oil coolers to hold oil temperature steady.

In these duties the cooler may see intermittent shock loads or a steady thermal input, so selection is based on the real heat rejection required rather than on the size of the reservoir alone.

How an Oil Cooler Works

Heat is transferred from the oil to a cooling medium, usually water or air, across a tube bundle or finned surface. A water cooled cooler offers compact heat transfer and a controlled coolant temperature, while an air cooled cooler avoids the need for cooling water altogether.

A circulation arrangement, either from the system pump or a dedicated pump, moves oil through the cooler. Temperature sensors or thermostatic valves can bypass the cooler when the oil is already cool, saving energy and preventing over-cooling.

Construction

Coolers are built from tube bundles and shells in materials suited to the oil and coolant involved, with joints arranged so that the oil and water never mix even under pressure variation. Fins, plates or tubes are shaped to give good heat transfer with low pressure drop.

Drain points, vents and end covers are positioned so that cleaning and inspection are practical. External surfaces are finished to suit the plant atmosphere.

Selection and Sizing

Sizing needs the heat load to be rejected, the oil flow available, the allowable oil temperature and the coolant conditions. Pressure drop across the cooler must stay within what the circuit can tolerate, so heat transfer area and flow path are chosen together.

Herambh Coolingz engineers oil coolers to the duty rather than to a single fixed model, so the cooler fits the pressure, flow and temperature of the system it serves.

Installation and Maintenance

Correct installation means good access for service, proper venting to remove trapped air and piping that does not impose loads on the cooler body. Return line or side-stream cooling arrangements are chosen to suit the system layout.

Routine maintenance is about keeping heat transfer surfaces clean and checking that coolant flow and oil flow are both healthy. Cleaning the oil side removes varnish, and cleaning the water side removes scale, and both preserve the cooler capacity.

Air Cooled or Water Cooled

Air cooled oil coolers suit mobile machinery and plants where water is unavailable or unwanted, and they are simple to install. Water cooled oil coolers suit stationary plants with an existing cooling circuit and give compact, quiet operation with tighter temperature control.

The choice usually comes down to available utilities, space and the precision of temperature control required. On many sites a hybrid layout is used, with air cooling for day-to-day duty and water cooling reserved for peak thermal loads.

Keeping Oil Coolers Working Well

A cooler that is installed with good access and serviced on a simple schedule gives years of steady service. The two things that most often reduce its performance are dirty heat transfer surfaces and a cooling circuit that is not flowing as designed, and both are easy to check.

Watching oil temperature and the pressure drop across the cooler in normal operation shows when cleaning is due. That turns maintenance into a planned task rather than a reaction to an overheating machine, and it keeps the hydraulic system running within its design temperature well beyond the first year.

Describe your hydraulic or quench oil duty to Herambh Coolingz and we will recommend an oil cooler matched to the heat load and flow available.
